Makahiki Practice

By: Saia Stone-He

In ancient Hawaii, Makahiki was a time of peace where war ended, and warriors traveled to the Makahiki grounds to compete against each other in games of strength, endurance, speed, and skill. In modern times, Makahiki is an event where students from each school come together and compete against each other in games. Aka`ula High School students are teaching and practicing Makahiki games with us so when Makahiki arrives we are ready.

Bullies

By: Sydni Pawn

Last week Monday, the teachers started the “Bully Free Zone, which means there are no bullies allowed. When we wrote free- verse poems last week, the topic was about a time when we were bullied, when we bullied someone else, or when we saw someone being bullied and didn’t do anything about it. Each student chose one of these topics, wrote our poems, and posted them on the whiteboard in the back of the room for other people to read. And that’s not all. Each week four students will work together to plan an activity or game for everyone to play on Friday just before we lower the flags. These games/activities will help us work together to make the campus a “bully free zone”

SMOKE

Sun shining,

girls talking

on a green bench

their gossip floats through the air

like thick smoke

tracking down their victim

unknowing

I walk into the smoke

sneers and cackling laughter

intimidates and crushes self-esteem

without a touch

I sit broken and alone.

Hateful Words

“FAT!!”

strong hateful word

makes me feel ugly

inside and out

makes me feel like I’m

NOT

a part of this world

I almost cried

but I kept strong

at school
